About Me

Picture
Hi! My name is Selena and I opened Kinetic K9 in December of 2011. I have been around animals my entire life. When I was a kid we lived on a hobby farm. My mother was a horse trainer and veterinary assistant and I frequently went with her to volunteer at various vet clinics. We had cats, dogs, horses, chickens, goats, pigs, alpacas, degus, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, snakes, lizards, fish, peafowl, pheasants and more. From the age of 12 onwards, I was actively participating in obedience and agility with my Sheltie and when I got my first job at 13 years old, it was at a local vet clinic.

At 17, I started breeding and showing Doberman Pinschers under the Abarat prefix. I knew I wanted a career working with animals, but couldn't decide what area interested me the most. I ultimately ended up turning down my acceptance into the Thompson Rivers University Animal Health Technology program due to my own health issues. This lead me instead to another job in Victoria at a pet grooming and doggy daycare shop. Though my job mostly involved dog walking and monitoring the daycare dogs, I quickly developed an interest in the grooming that took place in the shop. I finally got to see first hand how the beautiful dogs I saw at the shows were made to look the way they did. I had finally found a niche within the pet care industry that spoke to both my love for dogs and my artistic side.

I took the Professional Groomer's course in 2007. I feel that my combination of show grooming and pet grooming education allows me to be versatile and creative, while offering options that many other groomers cannot. As an artist, I am a perfectionist with an eye for detail. From simple clean-ups, breed specific clips and hand stripping all the way to mohawks, hair-dyeing and creative grooming, I love what I do and will go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction and a positive experience for your pet.

In 2009, I was again hungry for knowledge. I expanded my abilities by attaining the only government certified titles for dog training; I became a Certified Obedience Instructor and Certified Master Trainer through Canada West Canine Centre. I am qualified to teach all levels of obedience up to utility, rally-o, agility, police K9 (including tracking and protection) and service dog work. Additionally, I can train dogs for search & rescue and scent detection (such as narcotics, explosives and accelerants.) I am also equipped to resolve all sorts of behavioural issues from fear to aggression, separation anxiety and more. I have a deep understanding of the various breeds and their specific personality traits.

In 2015 I hosted and attended a DogSafe Canine First Aid course, attaining the highest possible score (100%.) I am a firm believer that the more knowledge and education I and my staff have, the better equipped we will be to offer quality care for our clients.

In my spare time, I continue to enjoy working with and showing my own dogs (Black Magic Beaucerons) and am currently involved in conformation handling and IPO sport with them.

At Kinetic K9 we offer a daycare that is safe, clean, and monitored by highly trained staff. We offer grooming services that will make your pet look and feel great, while maintaining a relaxed and professional atmosphere. Our staff are some of the most qualified and knowledgeable in the city and we are constantly continuing our education. We hope to be your one-stop shop for advice, services and products.
